Taste of The Caribbean: May 1st, 2010

We hosted our 5th Annual Taste of the Caribbean Fundraiser Gala on May 1st, 2010.

It was a fantastic night of fun in support of the Brain Injury Association of Windsor & Essex County with a Caribbean Buffet, Dancing, DJ and Steelpan by E. Man & Caribbean Dancers

Thanks to everyone who came out to support us at our 5th Annual Taste of The Caribbean Fundraiser! This year’s event saw great music, dancing, limbo, some fantastic food and wonderful prizes. Thanks go out to all the sponsors of the event. Thank you to all the volunteers for offering their time and talents.

We look forward to seeing you all again at next year’s gala


Road Safety Challenge: May 12th, 2010

The Brain Injury Association of Windsor/Essex participated in the Road Safety Challenge

Road Safety was the message from several Windsor-Essex agencies during this event as they kicked off a month-long event schedule for the region. That includes the “Helmets on Kids” program that began in Windsor last year. It’s a program aimed at providing children with
free helmets, if they can’t afford to buy them.


Pasta Fundraiser: June 9th, 2010

We hosted a Pasta Fundraiser at Mr. Bigg’s in Belle River on June 9th, 2010.

June is Brain Injury Awareness Month and the BIAWE is raising awareness with another one of our Pasta Fundraisers.

Tickets were $10 each:

All you can eat pasta, rolls, salad, tea & coffee … Some great door prizes were given out!

It was a fantastic night for all of us, check out the slide show to see the highlights.


Rediscover Your Bike, June 12, 2010

The event was a great success, with an estimated 130 participants, taking part in fitting, bike safety checks, the bike rodeo, and/or the trail riding at Little River Park.

For the injury prevention component of this event, The Windsor Paramedic Bike-Patrol Association was available to fit helmets and to give instruction on proper use.

BIAWE Donation for a Softouch Wand, June 27, 2010

The Brain Injury Association of Windsor/Essex donated $2000 that was designated for a Softouch Wand.

Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital is committed to providing the best care possible for the people of Windsor and Essex county and this neurosurgery tool will help in that endeavor.

BIAWE Joins Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code Program, August 3, 2010

The Brain Injury Association of Windsor/Essex County places a high value on our relationship with you, our donors. Drive-In Movie Night: Friday August 20th, 2010

BIAWE hosted a Drive-In Movie Night at the Ottawa Street Market plan Parking Lot on August 20, 2010, featuring the Disney Picture film “Up”

Thumbs Up Fore Golf: September 9th, 2010

The Brain Injury Association of Windsor & Essex County & the Johnson family cordially invite you to the:

1st Annual Bill Johnson Memorial Golf Tournament

Together, BIAWE and the Johnson family have established this golf tournament to support other families in our community. Bill was an avid golfer, but tragically, was involved in a car accident and suffered a catastrophic brain injury. It was a long and hard recovery, but with support, Bill was able to return home. Golf became a therapeutic part of his life. Bill always gave everyone the “thumbs up” sign. Unexpectedly, Bill passed away January 1, 2009. Bill would have celebrated his 40th birthday August 5, 2010. This tournament aims to celebrate his life, to support of community and help others through the BIAWE.

Laura Kay

Please join us in welcoming Laura Kay as our new Executive Director. The Brain Injury Association of Windsor/Essex selected her based on her excellent qualifications, suitability and outstanding references.

Laura’s main priorities are to maintain and expand existing programs, increase membership, referrals and participation in activities and to meet the needs of the BIAWE.

In addition, Laura will work in a liaison capacity with the Windsor Essex County Injury Prevention Coalition and Mental Health Connections. She has many years of experience in the non-profit sector working as a staff liaison with boards and leading campaigns from their inceptions to completion.
